Hey #FaciliFam, ever look sharp on camera one day - and the next, like you’re starring in a low-budget Hitchcock remake? Lighting does that - but this week, we’re fixing it with simple tweaks to help you show up clear and confident. No film crew. Just a smarter setup. Let’s light it up. 🔦 💡 Why Lighting MattersLighting sets the tone - and no camera can fix a poorly lit setup. It’s the fastest way to look sharp, polished, and professional - no fancy gear required. 💡 Before upgrading your camera, fix your lighting - it’s the easiest win. 🧠 Mindset FirstLighting is about consistency - not perfection. Keep it simple:
Start in darkness and build one light at a time.
Light yourself first – not your bookshelf.
Prioritize clean and flattering over flashy and chaotic.
Lock it in – once it works, stick with it and skip the last-minute scrambling.
💡 #FaciliTip: Record short clips or take screenshots. If something glares, glows, or distracts - adjust it before moving on. 🎥 3-Point Lighting – The Classic SetupThis setup is the foundation of everything we're covering. It’s simple, flexible, and instantly levels up your on-camera presence. The setup:1️⃣ Key Light - Lights your face 2️⃣ Fill Light - Softens shadows 3️⃣ Rim Light - Adds depth and separates you from the background 1️⃣ Key Light = KingIf you only use one light, make it this one. It does the heavy lifting to define your look.
Use a soft light - like a shaded lamp, softbox, or LED panel with diffusion.
Ideally, place it at a 45° angle from your face.
Slightly above eye level, angled down.
One arm’s length away is a solid starting point.
💡 #FaciliTip: Using just one light? Move it closer to the center to avoid harsh shadows. 2️⃣ Fill LightYour fill light softens the shadows created by your key light - not eliminate them.
Use a dimmer light than your key for balance. Opposite your key light (e.g. key left at 45° - fill right at 45°). Adjust distance and angle to fine-tune softness. 3️⃣ Rim LightYour rim light adds subtle glow and separates you from your background - for extra depth and polish. Place it behind you, slightly above and opposite your key light.
Aim it at the back of your head and shoulders.
💡 #FaciliTip: Want extra vibe? Use a colored bulb or RGB light for creative flair. 🛠️ My Lighting SetupWant to see how I light my own virtual studio? Here’s a peek at my desk, setup, and the gear I actually use.
🎛️ Brightness & ToneToo bright and you’re glowing. Too dark and you disappear. Aim for soft, even, and flattering. Tips to dial it in:
Use dimmable lights for easy control.
Move lights back to reduce intensity.
Bounce light off a wall or diffuse it with a white sheet or baking paper.
Close curtains or blinds - natural light shifts quickly and throws off consistency.
Be the brightest thing in frame - just not a spotlight.
🌡️ Color TemperatureLight has tone - too warm looks yellow, too cool looks ghostly. For virtual sessions, aim for a clean, neutral look with daylight-balanced lighting. Tips to get it right:Use bulbs around 5000K - usually printed on the bulb or packaging. Don’t mix warm and cool tones - it throws off your camera’s white balance. 👓 Wearing Glasses?Glare can sneak in when you least expect it. Quick fixes:
Angle lights wider, raise and tilt lights.
Indirect light works better - aim toward a wall, not your face.
Lower screen brightness, tilt glasses forward, use diffusion.
🛋️ Light the VibeGood lighting does its part - now let your space do the same. Quick set design & framing tips:
Light the background - not just yourself.
Use contrast - cool light in front, warm in the back (or vice versa).
Highlight props like books, plants, or brand elements.
Remove visual clutter - if it distracts, delete it.
Use the rule of thirds - avoid being dead-center.
Great lighting makes you look clear, confident, and camera-ready – no fancy gear needed. Dial in your setup, light your space with intention… and you’re halfway there. Work with the lights you already have – position and adjust them accordingly. Got desk lamps or IKEA lights? Great – use them. 🗓️ The Virtual Experience Masterclass Is BackLights? Nailed. On-screen?
